What is Community Supported Agriculture?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a subscription-style model of connecting consumers directly with the farm they get their food from. Being part of a CSA is a way for consumers to share with the farmer the costs of farming but also the bounty. Consumers pay in advance for a set period, and receive a regular supply of produce.

With our CSA, you can pay up front for your chosen season, or you can pay at the start of each month. The most important thing is that by signing up, you are agreeing to commit to the entire season, to eat with the seasons, and eat what the farm can produce at any given time. It is a shared experience between farmer and consumers.

A CSA is not your average box/meal kit subscription though, it is a deeper way of being involved in the farm, taking on a small portion of the financial responsibility, and reaping the rewards. This is why our subscription options are so much more than just a regular produce box - read on for more details!

At it’s heart, a CSA is a real way to keep a small farm sustainable, and to give consumers genuine ownership over their own food, especially at times when food security might become fragile. No matter what is happening in the mainstream food system, we will feed you.

How it benefits you:

  • Exclusive access to our produce and events (see below)

  • Freshest possible vegetables that are grown organically

  • Meat that is raised ethically, on pasture, and doesn’t contain fillers

  • Produce that is grown for flavour, not aesthetic

  • Weekly videos featuring recipe ideas and meal planning tips

  • Cost effective, and not subject to the whims of supermarkets

  • You know your farmer, and your food system is as transparent as it gets

  • Food security in a time of uncertainty

  • Knowing you’re contributing to a farm that is environment-first

  • Bring the kids along for box pick up - say hello to the animals, check on the progress of the crops we’re growing for you, and see what else we’re up to.

  • If you pay in full at the start of the season, you won’t have to pay for any veggies and/or meat for the rest of the season

How it benefits us:

  • A reliable, consistent source of income

  • We know exactly how much to plant, so there’s no wasted seed or end product

  • We get to keep another person employed (besides ourselves)

  • We get to deal with like-minded consumers who care about where their food comes from

  • By knowing exactly who we’re selling to, and how much, we can spend less time hustling, and more time tending our land and creating a great experience for subscribers.

frequently asked questions

  • If you’re picking your boxes up from the farm, your location is irrelevant except for billing purposes.

If you want home delivery, eligible towns include those within a 30km radius of Tarwin Lower, i.e. Venus Bay, Inverloch, Wonthaggi, Korumburra, Leongatha, Fish Creek, Meeniyan.

Home delivery to towns outside this radius, or to Melbourne, will be considered if there is enough interest. Delivery may incur an additional fee.

  • We will make your box regardless, so you can either tell a neighbour, friend, or family member to collect the box for themselves, or we can donate the box to a community centre on your behalf. The harvest will not wait for you to get back from holiday!

  • This depends on why you’ve missed the payment, and we’ll discuss options with you based on your situation.

If you miss a payment and we can’t get in touch with you, your subscription will be cancelled, and we’ll add someone from the waiting list to fill your place. As a CSA subscriber, you are committing to share responsibility of the farm’s operating costs, and if you miss a payment you become unreliable.

  • If you have a food allergy or a strong dislike of a certain food, we can add a note to your subscription never to include this. Maybe you can’t eat lamb, or you don’t like eggplant - we’ll substitute these things. But we reserve the right to choose what we substitute with.

  • We will be releasing weekly videos for subscribers to ‘follow along at home’ if they want to. Videos will include tips for meal planning and recipe ideas for those looking for some inspiration.

  • If you can’t get through all your fresh produce one week, we can tweak your next box to include extra frozen meals and less fresh items.

If you regularly can’t get through all your fresh produce, we may need to switch you to a smaller box.

If you have produce left over and don’t want it going to waste, you can give it back to us to feed the pigs and chickens.

This question is all about communication between consumer and farmer.

  • If you cancel your subscription due to change of mind/dissatisfaction, you will only be refunded for the time remaining if:

    • You paid in full upfront, and

    • We are able to add another subscriber in your place.

If you have an unexpected change in circumstances, we’ll handle this on a case-by-case basis.

Subscribers who cancel their CSA will have to reapply next season if they wish to take part again.
